When Loewe asked me to create a sculptural interpretation of their most iconic bag, the Amazona, I was surprised. I had never done anything like this before, neither from a formal point of view, as the focus of my work is the human figure, nor from the fact that I was working on the work of another artist, in this case Dario Rossi.

As I studied the copy of Amazona that Loewe gave me, I realised that the dimensions were familiar. Then it dawned on me that the whole thing was dimensioned with the number phi. I was looking at a speech made with the golden section, the divine proportion! Could this have something to do with its great success? The project grabbed me immediately.

To put it another way, I started a dialogue with Rossi out of time and I realised the importance of his work. Amazona was created at a time when Spain was opening up to the world, and it defined the new, independent, dynamic, cosmopolitan woman. It was then that I became aware of the psychological importance of the world of accessories, of how they could consolidate a person’s way of developing in society, of positioning herself before it and defining how she should be seen by it. I was fascinated by Rossi’s artistic choices.

The result was very satisfactory. I explained in a sculptural way how a design, an immaterial idea, crosses the threshold into the real world and becomes an object. I know I succeeded because everyone who stood in front of the Amazon I made immediately interpreted the argument, the narrative that I left printed in steel.
