In search of proximity to the sea and with the desire to discover the topical charms of the city, he settled in Barceloneta. He says that the rogue vocation of the neighborhood captivated him immediately, and he fondly remembers how the residents of this popular area enjoyed certain “privileges” when it came to acquiring contraband products.

But if something became a habit for him in his early years as a resident of Barcelona, it was his repeated visits to the França station, located very close to his home. This enclave became something like a place of pilgrimage to overcome the moments of loneliness and nostalgia suffered by anyone who settles alone in a new place with the desire to open new paths. A time of many and intense emotions, always complex. He found his moments of escape in the beautiful building, built for the Barcelona Universal Exposition in 1929.

Díez remembers: “I spent a lot of time in this place. I didn’t know anyone in the city and here I found the necessary calmness as a counterpart to the great work that comes from starting from scratch in an unknown city”. He confesses that, for him, the França station became a kind of timeless, surreal portal; a place where people and environments from various eras seemed to coexist naturally, almost outside. “Somehow that timelessness made everything relative and allowed me to escape from reality. It came and went, in an absolute sense. It is impossible not to perceive the metaphor that a season represents and also the relief, well looked at ”, he recounts with certain notes of poetry.

Today he is a renowned sculptor whose figurative stainless steel creations occupy public spaces and private collections around the world (locally, some of his works are currently on display at the hotel and restaurant Àbac, where the media Jordi Cruz defends three Michelin stars). Díez no longer lives in Barceloneta, but in Centelles, near the city. But he remains faithful to his favorite place in Barcelona, where he often goes. “Today I still feel exactly the same as when I came here in the 90s, and rarely do I not go into the hall to step on the marble or look at the prodigious ceiling. Also to look out on the platforms and feel again the grandiosity between organic and rational of the metal canopy ”, he confesses.

View original article

Article published in El Periódico It was in the middle of the 1990s and Jordi Díez Fernández arrived in Barcelona from Madrid, where he lived and worked at the time.
